After defeating Ares and claiming his throne as the new God Of War, Kratos finds satisfaction is waging war across continents and aiding his Spartan army. Equipped with the power of Olympus and the right to make his own decisions, the Ghost of Sparta finds contempt by seeing opposition crumble. This leads to him being turned against by the Gods of Olympus, especially Zeus, who plans not only to dethrone Kratos, but to slay him as well. The story starts off with Kratos taking on the massive Colossus of Rhodes.

Before Kratos embarked on his one-man journey against Olympus, he was a loyal servant to the Gods, performing their every order so that they may fulfill their promise of ridding him of his internal torment and guilt. Chains Of Olympus starts when Kratos is sent by Olympus to aid the city of Attica against the monstrous Persian army. The Persians have brought with them an unspeakable evil, a creature known only as the Basilisk. But that is only the calm before the storm, so to speak, as Kratos will soon find himself with a far greater problem and a much bigger threat to the Gods, when the sun falls out of the sky!
